Mornington Peninsula Heritage Awards Ceremony recognises Melbourne Water supported citizen science program at Merricks Creek

A partnership between Merricks Creek Estuary Watch Group and Melbourne Water was recognised with a Heritage Award from the National Trust and Mornington Peninsula Shire Council on Friday 22nd September. The Awards are a partnership between the Mornington Peninsula Shire Council and the National Trust to recognise those in the community who have demonstrated excellence in retention, restoration and reuse of heritage places on the Peninsula.

The Merricks Creek Estuary Watch Group was recognised under the ‘Sustainability and/or Greening of a Heritage Place’ category. The award recognises their outstanding contribution to conservation of natural heritage values of the estuary through citizen science monitoring and community advocacy conducted within the Melbourne Water-supported Estuary Watch program. In particular, the group has undertaken targeted, daily monitoring to collect pre and post-works impact data for estuary mouth remediation works delivered by DELWP and Melbourne Water. This has provided invaluable data for the works and contributed to improved community understanding of estuarine processes and remediation works outcomes.
